Side Hinged Garage Doors
What is a side hinged garage door?

Also known as side opening doors or barn doors, Side Hinged Garage Doors are an increasingly convenient way of securing your garage, when a garage space is used for storage, or a multipurpose room.

Door stays are normally supplied which holds the door in the open position, so the wind will not blow the door closed, and is released by operating a cord or catch to allow the door to be closed. Most doors are of a half / half configuration however some are available in a two thirds / one third configuration.

Which materials can I have my side hinged garage door fitted in?

Rolling Garage Doors
What is a roller garage door?

The roller door option has grown considerably in the last decade, the principal is derived from a roller shutter or window shutter, also known at a roller shutter door, roll up garage door, or security shutter. It is an insulated garage door that rolls up neatly in a box, the box size are normally 300mm, smaller box options are available using smaller lath size or an interlocking Vortex single skin roller shutter door.

Insulated composite aluminium lath (also known as slats) made of a double skin profile foam filled to give insulation and form the door area known as the curtain. These slide up and down vertically in a guide rail fixed to the wall each side which holds brush seals within the guide rails, this makes a reasonable seal when closed.

The lath is concave shape so it rolls into a cylinder easier, it should be noted that because of the concave shape of the lath when it is in the closed position, it won’t give 100% seal down the sides. The lath is normally 77mm high, smaller lath is available at 55mm if a smaller box is required, this will reduce the lateral strength to some degree.

How long do roller garage doors last for?

In our experience, we see many different qualities of roller door which all look similar in appearance.

Some are manufactured very well to last 20 – 30 years, with spring assist and additional safety and security details as standard.

There is the middle range which rely on just the tube motor to open and close the door. Under normal use these are expected to last 10 – 15 years.

We then see the budget roller doors, which normally come with 1 or 2 year warranty, these are considered inferior and not offered by our company. Often they don’t have the required safety, security or wind testing, and when you do the maths they cost a lot more as return on investment is low.
