For widening projects, we typically recommend a sectional garage door because it adapts well to almost any modified opening. A good example is a space‑optimisation project, where we installed an LPU 42 for a homeowner struggling to get two cars into their garage due to an awkward, restrictive entrance. Their main concerns were turning space and overall garage length.

To solve this, we extended the entrance by 20 cm using a forward‑set between‑fit configuration and installed a new double door. The project also included structural upgrades such as removing an oak post, adding a C‑shaped steel RSJ, protecting the lintel, and widening the access. Together, these improvements created significantly better manoeuvrability and increased internal capacity.

What are sectional garage doors made of?

Sectional garage doors typically have between four and six panels, made from galvanised steel with a weather-resistant laminate in rustic wood effects like Golden Oak, Dark Oak, and other authentic finishes. Also, polyester paint finishes come in many colours to work with your taste and lifestyle and includes RAL colours available on request. Doors have a double skin composite panel and insulated foam core. In addition, they can be made out of natural timber, composite wood-fibre and aluminium.

Are sectional garage doors completely sealed?

The outside panel on sectional garage doors is a flat surface and as they close the side tracks are slightly tapered, allowing the door to align tightly with rubber side seals. Also, they can be made with seals across the top frame, in between the panels and attached to the bottom panel along the floor. The floor seal is dependent on the condition of the floor itself but options can accommodate different driveway surfaces. Generally, any door with moving parts will not guarantee a 100% seal.

How long do sectional garage doors last?

As long as a good quality sectional garage door is maintained, it should last up to 30 or 40 years. Like most mechanisms that move they need to be properly serviced. In particular, this applies to automatic versions. We recommend a yearly service for normal domestic use.
