Colour and Surface Finishes.

Manufacturers commonly use the RAL system. With plentiful shades, tones, and decors to choose from there is certain to be a perfect or close match with your requirements.

Alongside the base colours, special finishes can include wood grain and decorative paint effects.

In addition, depending on the manufacturer, you can have different fitting variants, for the door curtain, side guides, fascia panel and shaft cover. The surface finish on these can be mixed and matched for a customised, harmonious effect.

Bear in mind that if you are looking to harmonise your roller garage door with existing windows and doors there can sometimes be tonal inconsistencies between wood paint, metal-based colours or UPVC coatings depending on the different manufacturing techniques used.

How do roller garage doors work?

They work in a similar way to a window shutter, rolling up neatly in a box when they’re not in use. They slide vertically within guide rails fixed to the wall each side and rolling around a central axle. They are available in manually operated or motorised versions for ease of use, with more sophisticated versions available, designed to reduce noise, wear and surface scuffing.

What are they made of?

Typically, premium roller garage doors are made of double skin insulated aluminium lathes (also known as slats). Budget options tend to be made from steel.

 

 

What size are roller garage doors?

They come in common sizes but can also be made to measure, depending on the brand. The size of the box that it rolls into is typically 300mm deep, however smaller box options are available when using a smaller lath size or an interlocking Vortex single skin roller shutter door. We will discuss these space considerations with you to help you decide which option is best for you.

What are the benefits of roller garage doors?

Roller garage doors are popular because they are neat, tidy and convenient, however, they are not fully sealed because of the nature of the roller mechanism. For most garages this is not a problem, but it’s worth being aware of.

Can I have windows in a roller door?

Yes, glazing elements can be added in sections and arranged across the entire profile of the slat to provide a good level of daylight.

Do roller doors require maintenance?

Not all doors are built to last, but as you would expect, any mechanism needs to be looked after to work at its best. Certain door and operating gear components will need to be lubricated at regular intervals and you should arrange for this to be done as required. Periodically clean the door panel using warm water and a soft cloth or sponge and allow to dry naturally. Never use detergent, abrasive, caustic, or solvent based cleaners as these may damage the door surface. Check and clean out the guide rails, too, removing any accumulated leaves and debris (Though thick brush seals on quality doors can reduce the need for this). In the interest of safety, we always recommend having the system inspected and maintained by a qualified person in accordance with the manufacturer’s specification. Roller doors should be serviced annually to ensure that the components are operating correctly and to ensure optimum running.
