Why we recommend Hörmann sectional garage doors

After installing, servicing and repairing Hörmann sectional garage doors for many years, we’ve found them to be one of the most consistently well-engineered systems available. It’s the brand we regularly recommend because every major component – the door leaf, frame, tracks, springs, seals and operator – is designed to work together as a complete system rather than as a collection of parts.

Hörmann manufactures its sectional garage doors under an ISO 9001 quality management system and designs them to comply with European Standard EN 13241. Those standards provide an important foundation, but what has impressed us most is how the doors perform over many years of everyday use.

One example stands out. We were recently called back to service a Hörmann sectional door we had installed around 20 years earlier on a contemporary home where achieving a perfectly flush architectural finish had been a priority. Despite two decades of regular operation – and remarkably, no lubrication throughout its life – the door was still running smoothly and required only routine maintenance. Experiences like this are one of the reasons we continue to recommend Hörmann for customers looking for long-term reliability rather than simply the lowest purchase price.

Throughout this guide, we’ll explain not only what makes Hörmann doors different, but why those engineering details matter in day-to-day ownership.

Why trust our advice?

We install, service and repair garage doors across The East of England and regularly work with a wide range of manufacturers. That gives us the opportunity to see how different products perform over many years – not just when they’re new.

Rather than relying solely on manufacturers’ brochures, this guide combines published Hörmann technical specifications with our own installation and servicing experience. Where we quote technical figures such as insulation values, cycle ratings or product features, they are taken from current Hörmann product literature. The installation examples included are projects completed by our own team.

Panel construction – Engineered down to the last detail.

Hörmann’s sectional panels use their extra thickness to deliver a noticeably sturdier, more solid door compared to typical 40 mm insulated options.

  • 42 mm or 67 mm thick double skinned steel sections – reduce denting and improve rigidity. Equally important, the foam core adds rigidity to strengthen the overall leaf when it is in the closed position.
  • Flexible tongue-and-groove panel system is shaped to perfectly interlock and become practically invisible when the door is closed.
  • Symmetrical appearance – the ribbing and section spacings are divided evenly at every door height.
  • Protection that lasts – Sections are double-sided hot-galvanised finished with a high-quality polyester primer on both sides
  • Depending on the surface you choose, the exterior gets a UV-resistant plastic film coating, or a high-strength protective paint – all designed for a permanently beautiful appearance.

Frame construction – Engineered to conform.

Matching frame appearance

Matching frames and fascias create a unified, harmonious door appearance, ensuring every surface finish aligns seamlessly for a perfectly coordinated installation.

All Hörmann sectional doors have a fully finished overall appearance. Frames can match the exact surface finish of the door leaf and fascia panels can be matched to the door sections. – so, the door, frame and fascia all look as one.

With Hörmann sectional garage doors, the frame is fully enclosed from top to bottom, leaving no gaps between the door leaf and the frame. This design prevents fingers from getting caught, making the door safer to use.

Insulation performance – Engineered to save energy.

Popular Hörmann sectional models

Steel sectional door models & insulation values

Hörmann offers two steel double-skinned sectional door models with different levels of insulation. The U-value tells you how well the door retains heat – the lower the number, the better the insulation.

Model Construction Insulation (U-value, fitted door) * Best For
LPU 67 Thermo Double-skinned, 67 mm sections with thermal break 1.0 W/(m²·K) Attached garages, rooms above/beside the garage, energy efficiency
LPU 42 Double-skinned, 42 mm sections 1.4 W/(m²·K) The popular all-rounder; great insulation & smooth travel

*U-values apply to fitted doors without glazing at 5000 × 2125 mm.

Both LPU doors offer acoustic insulation of approx. 25 dB, Class 3 wind load and Class 3 air/water tightness. The LPU 67 Thermo is the flagship – its 67 mm sections with thermal break deliver the best insulation in the range, making it the smart choice if your garage is integrated into your home. Despite this, the ThermoFrame is one specification detail often overlooked. Most buyers focus on section thickness, but the frame-to-wall junction is a common source of thermal bridging. The ThermoFrame addresses that area directly.

Garage space enhancement with Hörmann LPU 42 sectional door reconfiguration.

As an example, in Wymondham, Norfolk we installed a Hörmann LPU 42 sectional door for a homeowner who struggled to park both a large sports SUV and a sports convertible due to a narrow, awkward entrance. Their main concerns were turning space and overall garage length. We extended the entrance by 20 cm with a forward‑set between‑fit installation, added a new double LPU 42 door, and carried out structural works including oak post removal, a C‑shape steel RSJ, lintel protection, and widening of the opening – resulting in better manoeuvrability and significantly increased internal garage capacity.

Hörmann timber sectional garage doors

If your property’s facade already has lots of timber elements, then a high-quality solid timber sectional garage door can blend in naturally. Hörmann timber sectional garage doors are made from Nordic pine to your own individual style, or you can choose a standard rib design, or from a set range of stylised chevron, diamond, sunburst, and arched patterns precision machine routed into the wood section panels. The porous cellular structure of the Nordic pine traps air to provide natural insulation with a U-value of 3.0 W/(m²·K). Furthermore, Hörmann double impregnate the timber against fungal and insect attack.

Safety systems designed to exceed minimum requirements

Every Hörmann sectional garage door incorporates multiple safety features as standard rather than treating them as optional upgrades. Many sectional doors meet the minimum legal requirements for CE or UKCA conformity, but Hörmann integrates additional mechanical safeguards intended to improve both everyday operation and long-term reliability.

Examples include:

  • Finger-trap protection on the inside, outside and between hinges.
  • Patented spring safety systems that immediately secure the door if a spring fails.
  • Enclosed safety tracks and adjustable rollers that help keep the door securely guided throughout its travel.
  • Automatic obstacle detection that immediately stops and reverses the operator if resistance is detected.
  • Soft-start and soft-stop motor control, reducing wear while improving safety during operation.
  • Fully enclosed side frames that eliminate exposed trapping points while also reducing draughts.

These features work together to make the door safer for families while helping protect the mechanism throughout years of regular use.

Material options, surfaces & colours

This is where Hörmann’s flexibility really shines. Match your door to any architectural style:

Surfaces

  • Woodgrain – robust, authentic sawn-timber look; minor scratches are easily repaired).
  • Decograin – UV-resistant timber-look and metal effect decor in e.g. Golden Oak, Dark Oak, Titan Metallic).
  • Duragrain – digitally printed, extremely scratch- and stain-resistant, in 30 metal, concrete and wood effect decors.
  • Silkgrain – silky-smooth, elegant finish for modern architecture, with a 50% thicker exterior sheet for extra stability and smoother running.
  • Slategrain – textured finish modelled on natural slate slabs.

Colour choice

Slategrain is available in Traffic white and 4 matt fine structure colours (RAL 9007 Grey aluminium, RAL 9006 White aluminium, RAL 7016 Anthracite grey and CH 703 Anthracite metallic.

Woodgrain and Silkgrain are available in Traffic white, 10 MatchColour preferred colours, 5 preferred colours, and around 200 RAL Classic colours. The new MatchColour range lets you colour-coordinate your garage door, entrance door, and side door for perfect harmony.

The standard colour for the inside is Grey white RAL 9002.

Tip: Avoid dark colours for double-skinned steel doors on garages facing direct sun, as heat can cause section deflection.

Design elements – VarioDesign

Make it yours and mix up the Woodgrain or Silkgrain leaf design with Duragrain or Decograin sections.

Wicket doors: A built-in pedestrian door

A wicket door built into a sectional garage door gives you quick, easy access without lifting the entire door. It’s perfect for grabbing the bike, lawnmower or wheelbarrow, and it’s a real bonus if your garage doubles as a warm, usable space – whether that’s a utility room, home office, gym or workshop. You keep the heat in when you need it, but still have the option to fully open the main door for moving bulky items, boosting ventilation or opening the whole space to the driveway or garden during family get‑togethers.

It’s also an ideal solution when there’s no wall space for a separate side entrance, offering a practical and tidy alternative built straight into the door itself.

  • Available on LPU 42 (up to 5 m door width)
  • Clear opening widths of 830 mm or 1140 mm
  • A stainless-steel threshold rail just 10 mm high in the centre and 5 mm at the sides – reducing trip risk and making it easy to wheel things through.
  • Concealed hinges and a sturdy hold-open device prevent sagging and give a uniform appearance.
  • Optional multi-point locking (one bolt and hook bolt per section) for improved security

Glazing & windows

Bring natural light into your garage and add a design accent:

  • Classic rectangular glazing in various sizes and arrangements
  • DURATEC glazing comes as standard – permanently clear, extremely scratch-resistant and with improved thermal insulation.
  • A wide choice of infills: polycarbonate or synthetic double panes (clear, white/grey tinted), plus stainless-steel mesh and grille options.

Glazing is available for LPU 42, LPU 67 Thermo and the ART 42 aluminium-frame doors.

Automation: BiSecur operators & smart control

Pair your door with a Hörmann operator for effortless, secure access. All Hörmann operators use 128‑bit encrypted BiSecur radio technology – a bidirectional system with a highly secure encryption protocol, verified by Bochum University and independent institutes, so your signal can’t be copied.

FAQs

What is the most insulated Hörmann sectional garage door?

The LPU 67 Thermo sectional door is Hörmann’s top‑tier insulated model. It uses 67 mm thick double‑skinned steel panels filled with high‑density PU foam and includes advanced thermal breaks between sections. Its U‑value is as low as 0.33 W/m²K per section (one of the best in the industry for garage doors)

Can you put a pedestrian door in a Hörmann sectional garage door?

Yes – you can have a pedestrian door (wicket door) built into a Hörmann sectional garage door. Hörmann offers an integrated pedestrian door option on the LPU 42. These are factory‑built doors with a full-width frame and a low threshold so you can enter the garage without opening the whole garage door.

Can Hörmann sectional doors be manual or automated?

Yes – every Hörmann sectional door can be either manual or automated. Hörmann sectional doors are available in a manual configuration which uses torsion or tension springs to make lifting easy. However, we strongly support automation, and most buyers choose an electric operator. So, which should you choose?

Choose manual if:
– The garage is rarely used
– No power supply is available
– You want the lower cost option

Choose automated if:
– You use the garage daily
– You want convenience (remote control, app control, lighting)
– You want a heavy insulated door or double door
