How do up and over garage doors work?

The main door is fitted in a steel or timber frame, which is fixed either in between the garage aperture or behind it. The door gear is fixed to both the frame and the door, so that the door moves through the frame. There are also clearance gaps which allow for ventilation.

What are the gear options?

A canopy gear, also known as trackless gear, simply means that the door forms a canopy in the open position. The tracks are fitted vertically on the side frame and the spring system is overhead on the top frame. The spring is then connected by steel cables from a cylinder or cone at the top spring down to the guide rollers situated in the guide tracks. Widths are available up to 8’0’’ (2438mm) and heights up to 8’0’’ (2438mm), available in standard sizes and purpose made. The benefits of canopy doors are:

1. They are space saving with no need for tracks suspended horizontally from the roof joists
2. They provide maximum width for vehicular access when the door is open, with no lifting arms protruding into the opening
3. They are lightweight and smooth gears so that when the spring balance is set correctly they require very little effort to open and close.

Retractable gear, also known as tracked gear, means that the door fully retracts into the garage on horizontal tracks suspended from the roof structure or side walls. The weight of the door is balanced by side springs connected to the door with a lifting arm each side. Due to the way the mechanism works, doors are available up to 16’0’’ (4879mm) wide and are better suited to automatic doors with remote controlled opening if desired.

What are the benefits of up and over doors?

Space saving, lightweight and easy to operate. The slim nature of their fixtures means that you can maximise vehicle access. They also come in both automatic and manually controlled versions.

Are they completely sealed?

Up and over doors have a variety of seals available to prevent water seeping in on the floor. However, they are not designed to be completely sealed.

How safe are they?

All domestic garage doors now have an anti-drop device, which means that in the event of a cable or spring failure the door cannot crash down and cause injury. In addition, overlapping strips are now made from a flexible material to prevent fingers from getting trapped, lifting cables are now thicker which means they last much longer. Security has also been updated to suit contemporary needs, with additional four-way locking available as well as specialised security doors with Secure by Design accreditation.
