Supporting Garage Workshop Potential

Supporting Garage Workshop Potential

Eastern Garage Doors visited an old brick-built structure with dual aspects in North Norfolk to survey some larger than usual domestic size requirements, leading to a tailored solution with two types of garage doors for optimal functionality and efficiency.

Products Installed

Roller Door: UK Doors RD7 Classic with electric powered tubular motor

Side Hinged Door: Teckentrup Standard Horizontal Rib

Background

The building was originally a garage for a removal company’s furniture lorry, which required a large open space for vehicle storage. New homeowners moved in and wanted to use the property as a workshop. Insulation was a key priority to create a more comfortable functional space for year-round use.

Objectives

  1. Install high-quality, insulated garage doors to improve thermal efficiency.
  2. Replace the old side-hinged door with a modern insulated alternative.
  3. Ensure that both doors sealed tightly while accommodating the large dimensions of the garage openings and a flush fit with a recently repaired crumbling wall.

Challenges

Large Non-Standard Openings
The former lorry garage and extension featured oversized openings, with unusually large aperture sizes for residential use regarding height and width, respectively. These required made-to-measure doors that could provide the appropriate coverage – at 2800 mm x 3900 mm for the roller door and 2750 mm x 2200 mm for the side hinged.

Aging structures
The largest opening required careful preparation to address the challenges posed by the old uneven brick structure.

Matching Aesthetics
The side-hinged doors needed to align visually in design and colour with the roller door.

Solutions

Roller Garage Door Installation

The UK Doors Vertic-AL Classic was chosen for its capability to prevent the cold from penetrating into the garage.

  • Its insulated aluminium slats maximise thermal protection, whilst providing a robust design.
  • The door was a tailored fit to the wide opening, limiting the chance of any draughts.
  • A bottom rubber weather seal at the base of the door further enhanced insulation.

Side Hinged Garage Door Installation

To replace the old door, a Teckentrup side-hinged garage door was installed with a ½ ½ configuration and smooth anthracite grey finish. Key features included:

  • 40mm thick panels with a tested and accredited U-value
  • Concealed hinges
  • 3-sided door frame weather strip for draught reduction

Proactive Customer Support

  • During the installation, the manual release handle for the roller door was found to be too short. Resolving this issue through liaison with UK Doors about a replacement 2m long winder, highlighted Eastern Garage Door’s commitment to ensuring a fully functional and customer-friendly installation.
  • The roller door’s safety sensor bar, which only operated at human height, was discussed on-site with the customer. It was confirmed as acceptable since the workshop would only be used by people, without additional concerns of tall vehicles or objects requiring a safety stop.
  • The sustainable disposable of the old door was included, as is standard on all Eastern Garage Door projects.

Outcome

The combination of thermal efficiency, structural improvements previously done by the owner, and good garage door design ensured both spaces were secure, comfortable, and suitable for its new purpose.
